Here is a Quick demo - Not so great but just to demonstrate the concept of Link/URL based navigation for HTML5 Video.

Imagine you have 1 Hour video. One has to watch it fully in order to all details. But what about a person who just want to view 10 minute.
So now you can create a TOC - table to content - for HTML5 video lecture. user can jump to any section by clicking on links. Here is the most basic demo.
I am sorry that I dont have good CSS because ( I am lazy and I like the concept call KISS)

Modifying the specifications, it has said the laptops need to have only Windows Starter Edition with anti-virus licensed for a year. The plan to install Linux (Tamil) software has been scrapped, as per the new proposal. “We wanted the price to be as competitive as possible, and the installation of open source software was costing us Rs.100 more a machine,” said a top official in the IT Department.

UPDATE FROM THE PUBLIC SOFTWARE CENTRE

Subject Teacher Forum, Rashtriya Madhayamik Shikshana Abhiyaan, Karnataka - The Public Software Centre (PSC) continues to work with government high school teachers, to create digital learning resources in Mathematics, Sciences and Social Sciences, using public educational software applications, through the Subject Teacher Forum programme of Rashtriya Madyamik Shikshana Abhiyan (RMSA), Karnataka. These teachers will, as 'State Resource Persons', train their colleagues in 15 districts across the state, over this year.

Public Software in higher education - At the invitation of the Department of Technical Education (DTE), Karnataka, and the National Institute of Technical Teachers' Training and Research (NITTTR), the PSC has participated in the syllabus revision processes for the fifth and sixth semesters of the courses offered by polytechnics under DTE. This revision identified and listed public educational software alternatives to popular proprietary tools used. Subsequently, the DTE and the NITTTR have asked the PSC to be part of the capacity building exercise, in line with the revised syllabus, to help teachers learn the identified public educational software tools. We have also worked on a pilot programme for MEI Polytechnic (Bengaluru), introducing the faculty to Ubuntu and these tools. A core group of faculty members are working with PSC to create video learning resources (called spoken tutorials) in different curricular areas. This activity is supported by the Spoken Tutorial project, part of the National Mission for Education through ICT (NMEICT), a Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) programme to promote ICTs in higher education.

NEWS

The Draft Policy on Device Drivers for Procurement of Hardware for e-Governance of the Department of Information Technology, Government of India, discusses the need for device drivers on GNU/Linux operating systems. Since GNU/Linux is freely shareable and freely modifiable, implementing this policy would help government departments avoid 'vendor lock-in' into specific proprietary products only for which drivers are made available by the vendor. Recent discussions about the choice of the software applications to be incorporated in the free laptops

distributed this year to students in Tamil Nadu (India) have highlighted the attempts across India to promote the use of public software in education and other fields. The state government's tender specifications specifies the GNU/Linux operating system, as well as Windows starter edition. There are pedagogical arguments for using only public software resources in education. Read more here.

The Indian Income Tax Return form ITR has successfully been migrated to public software (LibreOffice/OpenOffice) for the assessment year 2011-2012 and is available on http://freedom-matters.in. For the coming years, this initiative should be undertaken by the Income Tax department itself, in order to ensure its availability for all, and cover the remaining ITR forms as well.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has provided a list of public educational software alternatives to proprietary applications used in engineering. This is a welcome move by AICTE to promote public software in engineering colleges, which otherwise spend huge amounts procuring proprietary software licenses or pirate software.

UK government departments have been ripped off by a 'cartel' of big IT firms

, a report by a committee of UK Members of Parliament has exposed. Some were paying as much as ten times the commercial rate for equipment and up to 3,500 pounds for a single desktop PC. In its report, the public administration committee recommends that departments use more small and medium-sized IT suppliers to increase competition and bring down prices. In India too, departments often procure IT equipment at DGS&D (Directorate General Of Supplies & Disposals) rates. The rationale of DGS@D price ceilings are relevant when prices increase, whereas in case of IT products, the prices keep reducing. Kerala IT procurement on open bidding gets IT products at prices 30% lower than DGS@D rates. One more factor which will keep procurement prices low is to encourage SMEs to participate. Many bids specify very high turnover requirements, which restrains participation in bids to very large vendors only and therefore affects competition and pricing.

How to Learn PHP ?

I've been into php for more than 3 years now, and at very stage i felt that i'm an expert only to realise that there are still so so many things i don't know!!
One needs to keep developing different things and you get new experiences with every project.

Don't go for frameworks at learning stage. Use a framework, write framework code and try to understand how it works, what coding pattern has been used, etc. Zend Framework is the best for this, I learned from Zend.

To master PHP, all you need to do is write more & more programs. Read the official PHP manual, its pretty exhaustive.

One of the best ways to learn PHP is, take a complex framework like Zend, understand its features, and try to build a framework from scratch. This is just for learning, using your own framework is strictly not recommended, you yourself know the difference between closed & open source and advantages of open source.

CodeIgniter or Kohana to start with, if at all. Best is to code in raw PHP at first. Symfony, CakePHP, Zend etc are great, but to my taste, they are too imposing: You need to learn the framework more than PHP.

It depends on which timeframe you are looking for. If you are good Developer or you know basic frameworks of Programming Concepts you are good to go with w3schools and php.net and start doing your coding stuff. Hardly 3-4 days, and you can start building almost 99% of stuffs which available on NET by PHP. ;-)

Framework? I am not sure why do you need that, apart from if you are not so confident about your style of Coding. :P

Android 3.2 (टैबलेट वाले हनीकॉम्ब का नवीनतम संस्करण) जारी हो गया है पर हिन्दी समर्थन नहीं। तीन साल हो गये ऍण्ड्रॉइड में हिन्दी का इन्तजार करते, इस इन्तजार में बूढ़े न हो जायें। आम हिन्दी उपयोक्ता ऍण्ड्रॉइड वाले फोन तथा टैबलेट खरीदना चाहता है पर हिन्दी समर्थन न होने से मन मसोस कर रह जाता है।

खैर इसमें गूगल की गलती नहीं हम भारतीयों की है। पहले अरबी का समर्थन भी नहीं था, 2010 में इसका बग दर्ज किये जाने पर कुछ महीनों में ही उसे कोई 5000 वोट मिले तो अगली रिलीज में अरबी शामिल कर ली गयी। जबकि हिन्दी सम्बन्धी बग 2008 से दर्ज हैं पर वोट सैकड़े से आगे जाते ही नहीं, पर्याप्त वोट न होने से वो प्राथमिकता सूची में नहीं आता। अब बताइये दोष किसका है गूगल का या हमारा? आम फोन, टैबलेट उपयोक्ता को छोड़ भी दें तो नेट पर हजारों हिन्दी पढ़ने-लिखने वाले होने पर भी हम वहाँ जाकर वोट करने का भी जहमत नहीं उठा सकते।

अब तक एक इश्यू को अधिकतम 570 के करीब वोट मिले हैं। अगर वोट हजारों में पहुँच जायें तो प्राथमिकता सूची में ऊपर जाने पर गूगल बाबा इस तरफ जरुर ध्यान देंगे।

मेरे विचार से हमें नेट पर सभी माध्यमों (समूह, ट्विटर, फेसबुक, ब्लॉग आदि) का उपयोग करके इस काम के लिये वोट जुटाने चाहिये। अपने अधिक से अधिक मित्रों को इसके लिये वोट करने को कहें।

[idea] Linux Daily Links

There are appx 100-200 Twitter whom you have to follow to get daily information on new news on FOSS or tutorial or digest.. following all these 200 accounts and reading 2000 Tweets per day is a pain.
in Twitter there are 3 types of things happen
1) personal tweets -- airtel sucks ?
2) discussion -- what is your email Id ?
3) links -- here is my new blog on FOSS --- ?

third part is the informative and what we need.
So I need a mechanism where we can get all FOSS news in daily and weekly digest.
We can create a team and web services. Here is the idea.

We can setup a crawler account on Identi.ca/Twitter which follow all 200-500 FOSSy guys all around.
1) daily at 10pm, our web-application fetch all Dents and Tweets. I guess it can be done via RSS feeds and API.
2) Delete all Dents and Tweets which do not contain URL
3) Next System will find duplicate. How ? If two URL are same then delete one post.
4) Next Show all Dents/Tweets into one single page where our team member will login and see all the post and they can now delete or rearrange their order or edit text. duplicates can be removed at this stage. non-relevant URL/posts can be removed. If 20 user login and do this task, then it will be a 10-15 minute job which we can spend rather then spending 2-3 Hour on polling.
5) At Morning it can released as news Collaborative FOSS News Paper..

ITR with LibreOffice [India]

Kindly note that the ITR1 form for filing income tax returns is successfully migrated to LibreOffice / OpenOffice for this year (Assessment year 2011-2012) and available on the same site, http://freedom-matters.in . Kindly spread the word. Also, I just successfully filed my own returns using the migrated spreadsheet using LibreOffice 3.3.2 :-).

The goal of this endeavour is that no person who wants to file ITR and does not have MS Excel should suffer because of this partiality by the Government. But we are still a long way from this. The problem is, every year the form changes, since tax rules change, so this migration is going to be difficult in future. We need to get the Government / IT Department to stop favouring MS Excel. They are only making it harder for non-MS Office users. Kindly lets continue this discussion and effort to put pressure on the concerned people to make a change in this department.

it is 1.2 MB and total size is 2 minute 9 second.
So , You actually need 1200/129 = 9.4 KB per second... {1 hour lecture = appx 30MB}

My goal is bring it down to something like 5 KB per second or may be like 1 KB per second.. but I am happy with even 10KBps bitrate..
I am improving my system and hopefully I will be able to create a website similar to Youtube but for educational contents..

HTML5 based Eduvid Slidecasting Demo : Low Bandwidth Streaming

Today I escaped normal routine and sit down to have a minimal version of slidecasting using HTML5.

Slidecast is basically a combination of html-slides, image, and audio. HTML5 support Video/Audio element.
I prepared this proof-of-concept demo for html5 version of slide-casting my presentation. We do not need flash.
Normally audio will take only 10% of bandwidth and 90% bandwidth is used by video. uploading and downloading videos is very hard.
So it is time to slidecasting your work. If you organise workshop or conference or meetup then you can upload slidecast , you do not need any video camera to do this. I will try to create a software to note down the timing of slides.

This kind of demos are very useful to create educational contents. If we (FOSS community) of India create such slidecasts in each meetups then very soon we will be having a good amount of slidecasts (Or Eduvids)

I hope this year , I will be able to produce some good version of Project Eduvid and We all will be generating good contents from our own desk..

How students and I was able to install Software in a Computer Lab today

I use to teach kids how to use Computer as part of SchoolOS.org project. NCERT (Delhi) hosted Computer Workshop for Kids. morning session is for kids below 12 years and noon session is for children above 12 years..

I use to teach lots of program to students. I will share other experience later but today I will tell small story.

1.5 year back when we created schoolOS I forget to add tuxmath and childplay software in it.
I wanted to install these software in all 20 computers.. System was having very slow Internet connection. The solution is DebBundle. "Download Once, Install Everywhere"

So I download my own software (DebBundle)..

This will generate
Tuxmath_and_Childsplay.i686.OneClickInstall file

I copied this file to all systems and and clicking it , I was able to install tuxmath and childsplay software in all computer.

Now come to student.. Student like supertux game a lot. whenever they get even a small amount of time they tried to play supertux..
Even I was about to detain one student for this..

I removed supertux from all computer.. Now there were 1-2 smart student who were trying some commands like
$ INSTALL SUPER TUX
$ SU DO SUPER TUX
etc
on their desktop to install supertux game.

then I game a small challenge.. Every student must search on internet on "How to install Supertux on linux" .
all student started to find..

Finally after 10 minute of hard work one student figured out -- the synaptic package manager.. they liked it very much because installation to any software is very easy .. but it took 30 minute to install supertux again on all system...

1. Create an announcement group in the Google Apps (My university is using the education edition).
Let the group name be testgroup and the group email id - test.group@sample.edu

2. Add some email ids to the group.

3. Add a email id as the owner of the group say email id - group.owner@sapmle.edu.

4. Use a "fake mailer service". In the "send from" field :- group.owner@sample.edu; "send-to" field:- test.group@sample.edu.

5. The mail will be sent to all the group members of testgroup.

6. The email will also appear in the Sent Items of the email id - group.owner@sample.edu

PS: I have not tested it with a "normal" PHP(or other) mail script, but with a fake mailer service available online.

This should be fixed at the earliest and just email based validation for the group owner (or others that have permissions to post/mail)
for checking the permission should not be the ONLY (as others validation fail in this context) validation.

I would be happy to be contacted if some more information is required. And also to be notified when this is fixed.

I know there are multiple solution to this problem.. Here I am giving one very solution which looks perfect to solve the problem

What this little script will do..
For example, your system do not have vlc , then you can go to other system which has Internet and then run the script .
Script will produce VLC.i386.OneClickInstall ,

You can can carry this file to anywhere and then install it by just clicking it. Let me repeat, Just by clicking it, neither you terminal , nor you need any extra software to install it.

In Nutshell, these OneClickInstall are just small repository of software. So for every Repo,there will be another package.

No OneClickInstall will be created if you already have the package.
Creation of these OneClickInstall Package will be done by central website. Script basically resolve dependency and download package and then create a single executable zip file. If you already have that package, then script will not download any package. So the person like me who want to create these oneclick packages , they are advice to use a freshly installed system. You can say it a Build system.

Those who want to INSTALL these OneClickInstall software package

Bottom line, Linux and the thousands of apps on it are still free. I
dont think, Bharat Swabhiman would have any problems with FOSS model.

Enterprise solutions is a bogus buzz word for people who dont want to
spend time learning how to manage clustered environment. At my work
place, we have all fedora cores boxes in a so called 'enterprise
environment'. We have raid solutions that fedora core picks up right
out of the box, no additional 'support' required. We have J2EE app
servers and mysql DB servers running on our linux boxes. The company
runs a massive media content mgmt website with over hundred thousand
hits everyday. We never felt to 'buy' enterprise support.

It all depends on what you are planning to do. For most apps, FOSS is
fine. Only when you get into fancy parallel or distributed computing
with real time replication, you might require 'expertise' that you
obviously would have to pay for.

Google data centers run on barebone linux that probably run on pentium
III PCs. You cant get more 'enterprise' than google. Pixar's rendering
technology consists of thousands of linux boxes that churn out all
their fancy movies. No fancy Mac machines. Basically what I want to
say is you can 'scale' with FOSS linux. You just need to have the
expertise to modify the source code and adapt it to your requirements.

Our college too uses the Super Outdated( read useless! ) Borland graphics.h. I was NOT OK with this, so I asked my teacher permission to use
OpenGL, to which she agreed with enthusiasm!

Now the thing is that OpenGL just does the rendering part of a graphical application, but it does not create/manage the actual program window.
So we have got 3rd party libraries to manage the windows and other Operating System integration features like, taking user Input, Using sound etc.

The 2 popular Window management libraries used with OpenGL are SDL and GLUT:
I did a lot of research a few months back, comparing SDL and GLUT...

Here is what I found out through personal use and many forums from the internet as well as the OpenGL IRC channel:

GLUT PROS:

1) GLUT is very easy to use for small projects!
2) The official OpenGL Programming Guide aka the Red Book has example code using GLUT.
3) Many universities worldwide use GLUT, because it was the standard before SDL arrived!

GLUT CONS:

1) GLUT is only suitable for individual TOY or DEMO graphical applications.
2) GLUT teaches wrong programming habbits.
3) GLUT does not handle SOUND/USER INPUT afaik, please correct me if I am wrong on this point!

SDL PROS:

1) Is suitable for full fledged Graphical Applications.
2) Logical and Intuitive to understand once you have grasped the basics.
3) Good documentation, but sometimes the documentation can be a bit difficult to understand.
4) Has an active online community which will readily help you out!( I have verified this :) )
5) Can easily handle sound, custom fonts as well as user input events.
6) You can easily make video games using SDL and OpenGL.
7) Plenty of source code examples of SDL+OpenGL apps can be found on the internet.

SDL CONS:

1) A bit difficult to learn at first, but is worth the effort.

Since then I have stuck to C++/SDL/OpenGL and have achieved excellent results!

I study OpenGL from The Red Book, but instead of using GLUT I use( and highly recommend! ) SDL

For learning SDL the best place on the internet is:
www.lazyfoo.net

It will take you only about a week to grasp SDL basics and get comfortable in using SDL.

I also took a look and used Allegro for sometime, Indeed it is very familiar with graphics.h, but then You Don't get to learn much about Computer Graphics Programming by using it.....whereas by using OpenGL, you gain relevant experience in OpenGL which reflects well in your skill-set as well adds another star to your resume!( Did I mention that teachers think that you are super cool! and may even award you some grace marks! ;))

Final Point: Learning to use OpenGL and graphics programming without understanding the Computer Graphics theory concepts will do you no good! So do not sleep in your Computer Graphics class :)

Most of the person like me start their from single word - "Linux", we start this amazing journey but later on we realize that its all about something unique.. The basic thought is "Freedom and Decentralization" Decentralization is key Motto behind many efforts..
So in the FOSS world, we care about many thing and do activities on many things..
Open Standards are more important then Open Source itself. And there is a great danger of "Software patents", DRM etc on top of these thing.. What we are doing,, we do not have any good "term" to represent our broad activities...
We have two choice for defining our activities -- "Hactivism" or "Open Technology"
So, Basically, we people want Open Technology..
So next time when you try to form some Local User group.. Do not say Linux User Group.. Say it. Open Technology User Group.. This will include all aspects..

This is the very simple trick using what I hve converted even my family doctor to use Linux.

He kept telling me that his machine used to get infected by Virus (and always was formatted)

I told him, that I have an OS that is Virus free and also Free to Use and Share.

I installed Ubuntu on his laptop, and also gave him the CD. He liked it at that level, he Formated his home system and installed Ubuntu on it.

Rule 1. Never offer School OS as Linux. Just say this is another Operating Sysem. Already Windows lover have poisoned minds of desktop users by potraying Linux as a Text Only OS.

Rule 2. Show the fast boot up.

Rule 3. Open a Document, Presentation and spreadsheet and show it to them.

Rule 4: Open FireFox and Media Players.

Rule 5: Show them the features that School OS has which windows wont ever give. The smooth changing of Wall paper with fast response time, etc.

Ruke 6: Tell them that you can completely customized the OS and in fact create as many replicas as the current system is, and even when they change the Mother board, still the OS will work out of the box without even bothering to re-install Drivers.

If you have one big folder with lots of scripts. You can convert this folder into one-click installer using this "Script" -- you need to have Nautilus for it. It is possible to create better cross-platform GUI for it but I do not have time to do it.

What is This ??

Many a time, I write some scripts or create software.. Installation or running these scripts is very easy for me but it become a trouble for me to teach other how to install or run the script because 1) Newbies do not know how to run terminal and its command like sudo ls space etc 2) Even If I tell him/her on phone , he/she will always mistake in spelling 3) Even If I create a installer script ,problem remain same, he/she have to do to terminal.. So what is the solution.. ???

A Solution would be a SOFTWARE who will compress whole folder into single executable file. User can click and run this executable from GUI too. When User click on this file form GUI, It will automatically extract the file into /tmp directory and run a "initial starter script" from extracted directory.

So in nutshell, If you want to create or send Linux shell script packages then you can use this software.

Who Wrote this software ::- NOT ME, there already exist a tool called "makeself" , but makeself again a command mode tool, So I created a GUI for It.

HOW TO CONVERT FOLDER INTO EXECUTABLE ?

Install the package. Just go a folder -> Right Click , Scripts -> Convert Folder into Executable Now it will ask which shell file you want to run from that Folder. Finally it will create a FolderName?.run file. You can share this file, now anybody copy to his/her linux box and just click to run it.

Why I Created This ?

A month ago created a Keyboard Layout. http://code.google.com/p/soni-hindi-phonetic-keyboard/ Which is basically a single file package User have to download hi-soni-phonetic.mim file and copy into /usr/share/m17n directory. I felt this even this is very difficult task for a newbies because he do not know how to copy a file into a area where normal user cannot write files. so user have to go to terminal and need to write this command sudo cp hi-soni-phonetic.mim /usr/share/m17n

It took me 20 minute to dictate this command on phone. This happen with many times. So what I did is a new approach, I create a folder and placed this hi-soni-phonetic.mim file inside it.

Soni-KeyLayout/ ............../hi-soni-phonetic.mim ............../install.sh

I wrote a install.sh file too which is basically contain following lines

#!/bin/bashsudo cp ./hi-soni-phonetic.mim /usr/share/m17n exit 0

Now after this, made a Right Click -> Scripts -> Convert Folder into Executable I selected install.sh , because I want to run this file.

So Finally I got a single file Soni-KeyLayout?.run , Now I can send this .run file to anybody and all he need to click it to run it.

NIC India == .Net Implementation Center : Fight Back

It seems the proverb "Elephant's Chewing Teeth are different from Exhibiting Teeth" rightly matches as the situation of NIC

It seems NIC is actually .Net Implementation Center. All the NIC sites are made in .net
(except our national site i.e. india.gov.in and few of its sub sites which I am really proud of as they have followed Web Standards)

I just came across .net based Ministry of Rural Development Portal http://ruraldiksha.nic.in/main.aspx that is supposed to provide DIKSHA to rural areas (through PAID RESTRICTED SOFTWARE ENVIRONMENT)

So one thing for sure that either there are no hard and fast standard defined for what platform to use (or may be not followed even when defined)

What can be the reason:
1. There is unawareness about FOSS
2. The Tender System where the tender document os not specific and strict on selection of FOSS
3. FOSS communities do not care about such tenders and let it go to proprietary supporters

Now the point is why is popularity of such proprietary tools increased when FOSS alternatives exist:

1. Proprietary Companies see to it that they reach every organization for demonstration and also provide evaluation packages to them. Some also provide those software for free.

2. On other hand FOSS supporters, crib that they are doing some sort of Non Profit work and they cant go at that extent to conduct such FREE Demos for FREE Software

3. When the proprietary companies get the project and some (small civilian) Foss supporter report it to FOSS community, he/she is humiliated and told that it is a way of business and we cannot do anything about it due to lack of alternatives (even when there are many)

4. This means that FOSS Community is just for playing Mail-Mail game OR part-time mailing list fun.

5. Due to this attitude, people crib saying that FOSS community doesn't provide morale support, and proprietary companies even when they charge provide support

FOSS communities of India should standup and work together !! We at Delhi Going to organize a peaceful protest against "Software Corruption"

Software Corruption Or Software Ghotala is a name given to process where a Government do not choose Must better Free Software/Open-Source Software and waste tax payer's money for purchasing some proprietary software again and again.

1) Anybody from any age group can join Internship at ELPA (Delhi).
2) ELPA is start-up company. I mainly do intensive RnD in FOSS and Open Technology

7) Certificate will be provided to you at the end of Internship.
7) In Nutshell, If you are hungry for FOSS Knowledge then ELPA will welcome you.

Summery of Comments

Use FOSS in ICT
Use Open Standards (Ex - royaltee free codes ) in ICT
Use Open HTML5 for digital content creation in ICT
Use only those Hardware for which has open driver specification or driver available for all platform.
Avoid “Vendor Lock-In” at every level.

A . VIRUS FREE

Section 4.2 – Stage 1 Basic – Page 6 says

“Connecting to the internet, using e-mail and web surfing, using search engines, keeping the

computer updated and virus free, operating and managing content from external devices

(sound recorders, digital cameras, scanners etc.); connect, disconnect, operate and

troubleshoot digital devices;”

The Term Virus Free is do not fit well, because for getting virus one has to Install Windows Operating System. Problem of Virus is almost zero in Linux based Operating System. BOSS is a Linux based Operating System developed by CDAC. SchoolOS is supported by NCERT.

PURCHASE OF SOFTWARE

ICT Policy should dictate about what kind of software should be purchased

In table-furniture, the reproduction cost is not zero and every department of government has to buy Table furniture again and again. Software is not physical object like Table-Furniture. Software can be copied again and again. Reproduction cost of a software is zero. Software can be shared provided we have Copyrighter's permission to do so.

Almost all kind of software are available in FOSS. If Government find that some software is not suitable or not available as FOSS then Govt of India can develop or purchase a software and obtains license to use and distribute it. This will save a huge amount of money for repurchasing a piece of software again and again for same vendor.

D Implementation Strategies

Section 4.2.1 says - “4.2.1 A programme of ICT literacy will be implemented across all secondary schools in the

States, both government and private within the XI plan period.”

Every year Hardware Cost decrease and Technologies Changes are very rapid. So Implementation should be done in one shot. We suggest for partial implementation in every 5 year. ICT policy must dictate for a feedback mechanism for better implementation keeping track on rapid change of technology

Section 4.2.2 says - “4.2.2 States will develop an ICT literacy curriculum and appropriate course materials mapped to the stages mentioned above for uniformity. These will be in the form of self-instructional materials, enabling students and teachers to process them on their own. The ICT literacy programme will endeavour to provide a broad set of generic skills and

conceptual knowledge and not focus on mastering the use of specific software applications.”

ICT literacy curriculum and appropriate course materials should be developed at central node. This is a common task which can be done at central place.

5. ICT Infrastructure

5.1 Hardware Driver Specification must be available

ICT policy should dictate to use hardware for which Driver Specifications is available. For example, Vendor A create a hardware and it give driver B to run that hardware on a particular Operating System platform example Windows XP. This will produce a kind of Vendor Lock in of a Hardware. If After some year, you want to install another OS then hardware may or may not work because Vendor A has created driver B for only particular OS. Vendor A must create driver for all Operating System also Vendor A must publish driver specifications so that anyother vendor may provide a newer version of driver. This is needed because Vendor A may disappear from market from some day we will be having his “CLOSE” vendor-locked hardware.

Production of Hardware by Government

Since India is very big, ICT implementation need to be done at such a large scale. Let me give example for “Computer Mouse”. For example, If Indian Government want to buy 100 Crore Computer mouse and give to every citizen of India then I think it is much better to produce “computer mouse” rather then by buying it from foreign company. This is just a small example but scenario is same.

Do NOT waste Money on SMART Whieboard

Now a days you can find a good number of foreign companies selling SMART Whiteboard. SMART Whiteboard is just a Multi-touch Projector. Companies are charging 1+ lakh ruppe for such device. SMART whiteboard is a fancy item and it do not add any value to classroom. Even if you want to purchase SMART Whiteboard then you can create SMART Whiteboard in Rupee 500 -

“5.1.3 Each school will be equipped with at least one computer laboratory with at least 10

networked computers to begin with. Each laboratory will have a maximum of 20 computers,

accommodating 40 students at a time. A student computer ratio of minimum 10: 1 is to be

achieved progressively in all schools.”

ICT Policy MUST NOT dictate the structure of Computer Lab. A school may decide to go with Thin Client Computing Rather then purchasing 200 Computers for maintaining 10 computer labs.

“5.1.8 ICT enabled education can be significantly enhanced and the range of classroom

practices expanded with the introduction of digital devices like still and video cameras,

music and audio devices, digital microscopes and telescopes, digital probes for investigation

of various physical parameters. These will also form a part of the infrastructure. States will

make appropriate choices and promote the use of such devices in classrooms.”

Digital Cameras Or any Other ICT device MUST NOT encode files and PATENT Encumbered format. 5.3 SOFTWARE

“5.3.1 A wide variety of software applications and tools, going well beyond an office suite is

required to meet the demands of a broad based ICT literacy and ICT enabled teaching

learning programme. Graphics and animation, desktop publishing, web designing,

databases, and programming tools have the potential of increasing the range of skills and

conceptual knowledge of the students and teachers. A judicious mix of software will be

introduced in schools to keep Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) to the minimum.”

Also Policy do not dictate about what kind of Software will be considered.

Right now there are 2 kind of software present on this world.

Proprietary Software {No Copyrights given to user, it may be a free of cost or highly cost software too}
FOSS {Free (as in freedom) and Open Source Software} – {CopyRights are given to user so that he can use software for any purpose, learn it, modify it and share it with other users (student here) }

India is a country where the first thing you will learn is - “Knowledge will increase with Sharing”. FOSS solutions fit best to our education ideologies. So ICT policy must ENFORCE the use of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software).

Total Cost of Ownership should be criteria for National Policy. Tomorrow some Vendor , Lets says Microsoft offer free of cost training, software, and books to India in order to give the minimum possible TCO, then will Indian Education System will handover itself to Microsoft ?

Rather then looking for Total cost of ownership, select what should be best for our education. If something is available then choose it otherwise we can create our own software which will be best fit in our pedagogy. If we use FOSS or create our software then we will get ownership of Infinite time period.

6.1 Digital Content and Resources

Best example of Digital Content Collaboration is Wikipedia. It maintains version history. I would like to suggest for having a common wiki (mediawiki software) for whole India (Bharat). All States will be able to collaborate. Communication for Collaboration can be done by MailMan Software which is basically a mailing list solution.

Wikibooks is a website which help in creating Open and Free book via online Collaboratation. Many universities are creating books on Wikibooks.org website. So It is highly recommand to use existing collaboration platform.

6.2 Development of Content

HTML5 is best suitable technology for Ebooks, Animations, Lessons, exercises, interactive games, models and simulations, videos,Presentation slides, plain text materials, graphics. HTML5 is newer W3C web-standard which provide better web applications.

You can visit to the fist website of the world which is still viewable in any browser. Most of the Browser vendor are now creating HTML5 Support in their Browser. So If we create any application or any digital content in HTML5 then

The life of digital content become infinite. You can always view a web application, if it is made using W3C recommended (or draft) technologies.
Web Application become platform independent
It is easy to host and share web-appications.

So it is highly recommended to use HTML5 for creating Any Digital Resource

W3C has SVG (since 2000 ) and CANVAS to create graphics in webpage. SVG is vector graphics and CANVAS is pixel graphics. Presentation Slides Or Audio Video Interaction can be made using HTML5 and Sister Technologies. SVG has full capabilities of animations.

“6.2.4 Teachers and students should be encouraged to develop e-content collaboratively.”

ICT policy should also tell for developing software by collaboration and prefer the software which are developed using collaboration. (ie FOSS)

7. Capacity Building

Student learn very fast then teacher. Creating Training videos and distributing directly to student/teacher will help a lot.

The latest (third) ICT in school education policy draft is available

This is a revision over the second draft released in July 2009

While the second draft explicitly favoured free and open source
software, the latest draft is silent on this aspect in this relevant
section 5.3, instead, using a 'total cost of ownership' argument which
is a red herring drawn by proprietary vendors to justify payment of
license fees.

Since ICTs need to be seen as educational resources, allowing for use
of proprietary educational resources (in the form of proprietary
software) would be detrimental to public system and antithetical to
the principles for educational resources used in any other case.
Education system needs to mandate the use of free software and this
omission is wrong. We need to write formally to MHRD in this regard.

Please share the document in your networks. Look forward to your

Gujrat - Adopting FOSS at very good rate

I am very proud that who so ever doing this work , is really doing good for Gujrat State,
3 days back, I had a conversation with my friend, Fortunately this friend believe is FOSS but his company mainly work in non-FOSS (specially .NET). when my friend's company approached in Gujrat state, Gujrat Govt asked for Ubuntu Support, Which is really a very good sign.

" This form has been tested successfully with Firefox version 3.6, OPERA and Google Crome. But found to have problems with old versions of Internet Explorer. Hence it is requested and suggested to use only Firefox Browsers to fill in the data. "

There are several things that trip the unwary.

This is the command that worked for me:

$ mencoder mf://out-*jpg -mf w=300:h=400:fps=2:type=jpg -ovc lavc
-lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:trell copy -oac copy -o f.avi

And before this I ensured that all pictures are of the same aspect
ratio. Obviously my pictures were of various aspect ratios.

You have to use ImageMagick like this:

$ convert i.jpg -resize !300x400 out-i.jpg

Only then the resizing will be done without minding about the aspect ratio.

You can create a video only using images of the same width and height.
Use the identify(1) command of ImageMagick
for ensuring this:

$ identify out-*

Background:

The client is a large call-out business headquartered in NOIDA with call
centres in 5 other cities in India, including New Delhi. At the time we
started, they had no IT or automation on the call floor at all.

Before you see the words "call centre" and freak out, let me assure you
that this is one of those professional ones -- any telecaller found
calling a DNC number is immediately and publicly terminated. In fact,
preventing calling of DNC was one of the reasons they wanted to give up
manual calling and switch to an IT solution where call-outs could be
controlled.

All the implementation decisions were taken by Tirveni and I in
conjunction with the client's technical team. We decided to go with
Asterisk for the telephony part and Linux desktops with headsets for the
tele-callers.

To answer the specific questions Sudhanwa and Nirmalya put up:

The key element here was stability and availability of packages. Pure
desktop distributions were ruled out due to their (typical) quick

CentOS don't have the wide variety of packages that Debian offers, so we
decided on Debian. Of course, our own affinity for Debian may have
played some part in that decision :)

The decision was made at headquarters. As I said, the organisation is
pretty raw where IT maturity is concerned, and having a strong,
technically sound, experienced CTO at the helm more or less defined the

Of course, business decisions are still made at the operations level, so
the technology strategy has to ensure that it's in sync with and can
service business requirements in what is, after all, a very dynamic
environment.

L1 and hopefully L2 support will be handled within the organisation. T
and I have been working on documenting standard procedures, and in the
past 2 months or so most of them have been handed over to the client's
support team, along with some scripts that make life easier for them
(e.g. quickly make new users -- you wouldn't believe the employee
turnover these call centres have!). We still handle some L2 and most L3
support, and that is likely to be the model going forward too.

Incidentally, anyone with Linux technical competence interested in a
job? ;-)

> D. What is the typical configuration of desktops, servers.

Desktops are commodity 2GB RAM, 3GHz Pentium dual-core machines. They
seem to be handling plain voice telephony over SIP just fine.

Servers are much larger -- Asterisk needs a load of power to handle 1000
simultaneous users, and we've split up functionality so that the SIP
handling and the PSTN connectivity are done by different servers.
Servers are typically 2x4 core or 4x4 core Xeon class boxes with SAS
disks.

> E. What was the timeframe to complete the project?

We started around mid-December (2010), got the servers by mid-Jan and
had one centre live on Asterisk within about 15 days of that. Planning
out the architecture in advance made a lot of difference to the overall
speed of implementation.

Tirveni did tons of preseed magic on the desktop front, and we now have
a process where you can put a bare machine on the LAN, select "Boot from
network" (PXE boot) and have a working, customised Debian desktop ready
for use in 10 minutes.

> F. What are the most troublesome situations you face during the whole

AFAIR, the most troublesome portions were (a) handling user creation,
(b) changing business requirements and (c) diagnosing and fixing
Asterisk-PSTN issues remotely.

User creation went through multiple phases of streamlining, until now we
have a process by which a support person can login to a desktop, run a
command, feed in the user ID, get it validated against a central
database and have the desktop ready for the user in about 30 seconds.
It's still not perfect, but we're getting there.

As mentioned before, business requirements keep changing, and keeping up
with them is quite a challenge. This is not due to lack of foresight on
the organisation's part -- just that business needs, TRAI regulations,
security issues, mandatory controls, etc. are so dynamic.

And if you're sitting in NOIDA and trying to manage an Asterisk box
connected to the PSTN 2000KM away, I have one word of advice: don't!
We're learning as we go along, but Asterisk diagnostics are cryptic to
say the least, and telcos are typically reluctant to acknowledge issues
at their end. You have to provide tons of evidence and sort of rub the
telco support person's nose into it until he actually takes some action
to fix a problem at his end.

Currently each centre is more or less an island. We're working with the
ISP to be able to tie all the centres together so that we can, for
example, login with a SIP client from NOIDA to, say, Chennai for testing
and so forth.

We were lucky to partner with a very competent networking company for
the LAN portion. The switch/VLAN design they did is also responsible
for the smoothness of the whole operation.

To sum up, it is possible to run call-out (and by extension call-in)
centres using purely FOSS tools and technologies. The two most
important things you need are:

- A competent team or consultant who understands the technologies and
stumbling blocks involved, and
- Commitment from the organisation's management and technical leaders to
the solution.

Given these, there is no reason why a FOSS solution cannot surpass
proprietary, commercial solutions in features and performance, and
undercut it thoroughly where pricing is concerned.

this code use w3m command line browser, you can also use other browser

Now just open a new console and run try it..

Now this command will search on wikipedia and return back some links
with numbers, just type the link number and the link will be opened
into browser (lynx, w3m or firefox )
So we got a cool way to search from Console..
Please note that Double Quote is important ( " " ) other wise, it
will take first word for search..

Tip, this command can also be used for correcting spelling mistake,
for example,

an average LUG mailing list would have around 2000 members. Imagine one
person makes a post of 50 lines. Imagine there are 50 replies in the
thread and no one trims. So you get 45X50X2000 unnecessary lines.
Multiply this into approximately one crore mailing lists - lakhs of
crores of garbage humming across the wires. Then calculate the
electricity needed for this. Then calculate the oil/coal burnt to
generate this electricity.

I'm a school student myself studying in CBSE, 11th Std., As far as
I can remember, I was taught VB and Flash in my 6th and 7th std. too,
but then I never payed much attention to it, because I was playing
with Eclipse and Blender at my home. Also, the marks are not included
for promotion (if that's the main criteria). I don't think CBSE
mandates the curriculum for CS below class 9 (have to check it up).

I would like to say that CBSE has changed its senior secondary
curriculum to comply with Open standards. They have 2 streams - namely
CS (Computer Science) and IP (Informatics Practices). CS deals with
C++ and IP deals with the front-end and back-end connectivity.
Previously, CBSE had used VB and Oracle for the IP stream. But now,
I'm learning Netbeans w/ JAVA and MySQL. But then again, the SWING API
which we're learning now in Netbeans has become obsolete. Both the
products are owned by a single company, namely Oracle, which has
earned the wrath of many Open source enthusiasts. The C++ that is
being taught in schools, is by using the old Turbo C++ ide. It's high
time they change it to gcc. As far as my text book is concerned it
goes like this: "Now click the start button, go to programs menu and
choose MySQL command prompt." Some of my friends whom I've asked to
switch, have asked me, "Will C++ work in Linux?" :-(

Although CBSE has mandated that the curriculum has to be based on open
standards, what is the use of having an entire open stack of
applications to learn, when your base Operating System is closed and
proprietary?

I want to add one more point related to Santhosh. He has passed as a

we would have been happy to see anyone with this qualification and
this attitude, no matter of location of birth or residence.

However, Bishakha's question and subsequent conversation helped, as it
gave impulse to Santhosh to submit the application. And that brings to
my mind that it would be good to pass the whole world periodically and
raise the geographical equality issue. And it is not a joke. That's
obviously giving people courage, or at least the idea, that they have
the same right to become members of any Wikimedia body, as any
Westerner has. Sometimes the qualifications won't be relevant for
particular position, sometimes they will.

We can record mouse and keyboard activity in xml. There are many events which are resolution independent.
for example mouse clicks, button press events . Now suppose you are dealing with some animation or game or just a slideshow. what you do ? you type some buttons from mouse or keyboard. Now if you can record the timeline of these events then we can play back at anytime.
The idea is very interesting for having automated slideshows ..

This is with reference to my application under Right to Information Act, 2005 dated October 21, 2010 filed before the The Central Public Information Officer, All India Council for Technical Education, 7th Floor, Chanderlok Building, Janpath, New Delhi- 110 001, for obtaining the following information:

1. Copy of the agreement signed on 15 October 2010 between between All India Council for Technical Education and Microsoft to deliver free access to development software and design software for institutions, students and faculty in India under DreamSpark program

2. Copy of the agreement signed on 15 October 2010 between All India Council for Technical Education and Autodesk to deliver free access to development software and design software for institutions, students and faculty in India

In response to my application, the CPIO has sent a letter dated January 11, 2011 refusing to provide the information requested, as per Section 8(1) of the RTI Act as the information is coming under commercial confidence, trade secrets or intellectual property. It is submitted that the letter does not specify reasons as to how the disclosure of an agreement entered with an organisation to provide software to students will result in giving information relating to commercial confidence, trade secrets or intellectual property. The CPIO has not given any justification for denying the information sought by the applicant. The letter furnished by the CPIO is not a speaking order and hence the refusal to provide information is not justifiable.

An agreement entered with an organisation to provide software to students cannot be withheld from the public citing commercial confidence as a reason. The Central Information Commission has held in Gita Dewan Verma Vs. Additional Secretary (UD) Govt. of NCT Delhi decided on 27.01.2009 that claim of 'commercial confidence' in denying access to agreements between private parties and the masters of the Public authorities,- Citizens, - runs counter to the principles of the Right to Information. The Central Information Commission has held in K.S. Jasrotia v Hindustan Steelworks Construction Limited dated 18-05-2007 that Memorandum of Understanding between two parties should not be treated as confidential papers. Hence withholding the information sought for from the applicant is unjustifiable and against the provisions of the Right to Information Act, 2005.

As per Section 8(1) (d) of the RTI Act, 2005, there shall be no obligation to give any citizen information including commercial confidence, trade secrets or intellectual property, the disclosure of which would harm the competitive position of a third party, unless the competent authority is satisfied that larger public interest warrants the disclosure of such information (emphasis supplied). AICTE is vested with the role of proper planning and co-ordinated development of the technical education system throughout the country. The agreement entered into by AICTE with Microsoft Corp and Autodesk has definite public interest considering the fact that it has a direct bearing on education provided to the student community. The Government of India and many State Governments have undertaken various initiatives to promote Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in the field of education as well as governance. Recently a letter was sent by Mr. N. K. Sinha, IAS, Additional Secretary (TEL), Department of Higher Education, MHRD to AICTE and Directors/VCs of Central Educational Institutions to explore Open Source Software Solutions before adopting proprietary solutions for their academic, administrative and financial needs. A copy of this letter dated January 12, 2011 is enclosed along with this appeal. In the light of initiatives undertaken by the Government in promoting Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), it is in public interest to disclose details of an agreement entered into by AICTE that could result in promotion of proprietary software. Knowledge Commons is a Non-profit organisation involved in development of Free software like SchoolOS, in collaboration with NCERT, and hence has a public interest in learning the details of such agreements entered into by the AICTE. As the information sought for is in larger public interest, the refusal to provide the information to the applicant is unjustifiable.

For the reasons stated above, I request you to quash the decision of the CPIO and to direct that the required information be furnished to the applicant at the earliest. I am enclosing a copy of the application along with this appeal.

Although the letter from the CPIO is dated January 11, 2011, it was delivered much later at my office and as I was on sick leave, I received the letter only on February 14, 2011. Considering these facts, I request you to condone the short delay in filing the appeal.

Summer internship for the Textbook companion project

The FOSSEE textbook companion project is part of the FOSSEE project at
IIT Bombay. This project is handled by the following professors at IIT
Bombay:

Prabhu Ramachandran (Aerospace Engg Dept), Kannan Moudgalya (Chemical
Engg Dept), Madhu Belur (Electrical Engg Dept), Mani Bhushan (Chemical
Engg Dept), PSV Nataraj (Systems and Control).

Textbook companion summer internship project can be taken up by
students in various colleges who want to undertake a summer internship
at IIT Bombay. The project will involve a teacher of the student (from
the same college) who has taught the subject for at least one or two
years. The teacher will guide the student through the project and will
be responsible for the student's submissions.

The procedure is as follows:

You should know or learn Scilab. Resources are provided here.

For use of any package (other than scilab) you should contact us
separately at contact@scilab.in.
You should propose three books in order of your preference using the
proposal form available at this link (you have to register in order
to access the proposal form).

You must ensure that the book you are proposing has not been completed
under this project or is currently being undertaken under this project
by someone else, (click Completed Books and Books in Progress to see
the respective lists). We will try to tentatively allot one of the
three proposed book. To see examples of the books that have already
been worked upon, visit Completed Books

Please note that the last date for sending codes of one typical
chapter is now extended to 18th March, 2011

It is suggested that you propose the book as early as possible and do
not wait for the last date as your favourite book may get assigned to
someone else.

After we receive your proposal (from the form in item 2 above), we
will respond within a day about which book is tentatively allotted to
you. After tentative allotment, you will submit to us all the codes
for one typical chapter within five days of the allotted book. Fill
the proposal form keeping this 5-days-constraint in mind. The
procedure and format for submitting the codes will be informed by
email.

If you will submit correct and good quality codes then your allotment
will be final with that book. You will be intimated about the approval
or disapproval for your proposal via email within 2 days. If you are
selected then your name along with the textbook proposed will appear
in Books in Progress.

After the final allotment you will start coding of the examples of
entire book in your college itself. You are required to send your
progress/codes to us every week at textbook@scilab.in. Also send the
same to your college teacher. (Note: Lack of regularity on your part
may force us to cancel your internship and the project will assigned
to another intern.)

Simultaneously, you should fill the IITB registration form (Link will
be made available soon on the website) and post it to us.

The time-frame for completion of the book coding will be decided
between you, your college teacher and us.

You will come to IIT Bombay for one week to carry out the changes
suggested by the reviewer. The exact dates for coming to IIT Bombay
will depend upon

    Availability of accommodation at IIT Bombay
    Completion of the book
    Review of the book

Candidates who finish the report as per specified procedures at the
end of their one week stay here in IIT Bombay will get a certificate:

"Certified that the work completed is equivalent to six weeks of

हिंदी और FOSS/Linux को बढावा देने के लिए क्या क्या कर सकते है ?
कुछ विचार जो मेरे दिमाग में आते है वो ये है...

१) लिनुक्स का एक पूरा हिंदी संस्करण बनाया जाये .. उसमे सुरु से अंत तक हिंदी ही हो. मेरा कहने का मतलब ये है कि उपभोक्ता को कोई भी software डाउनलोड ना करना पड़े. न ही कोई अलग से setting करना पड़े.
२) इंग्लिश में लिखी लिनुक्स/FOSS कि बुक्स को हिंदी में अनुवाद करे. अनुवाद को स्तर का होना चाहिए. एक जिसमे पूरी तरह से हिंदी का उपयोग हो और दूसरी अनुवाद जिसमे हिंगलिश का उप्योह हुआ हो.. जेसे कि मेने लिखा है, कुछ कुछ terms english में होंगी. हिंगलिश को पड़ना और समझना बहुत ही आसन होगा.
३) ओपन सौर्स में हिंदी का keyboard बनाया जा सकता है. जो कि RAM को राम और Hona को होना में कोन्वेर्ट करे. गूगल एंड कुछ और website hai (quillpad) जो ये कम करती है परन्तु वो ओपन नहीं है,
अगर मुझे सारे हिंदी शब्दों कि लिस्ट/Database मिल जाये तो में उन सबको अपनी प्रोजेक्ट वेबसाइट पर दाल दूंगा और जब भी जो visiter आएगा उसके सामने ये लिखा आएगा

और भी काफी कम कियाजा सकता है,, आप लोग ideas दीजिये. इसके आलावा ये भी बताये कि इन कामो को करने के लिए धन कहा से आएगा ?

The Idea is create FOSS KIT for on Intro to FOSS/Linux/OpenStandards for mass advocacy

Dear all,
      How about 6 hour workshop in various engineering colleges in India.
The Purpose of this workshop is to give general purpose Introduction on FOSS/Linux/OpenStandards
The material (Poster / Booklet / Book / CD / DVDs / Presentations / Speaker Session etc ) will be same at each engineering college. So organising such Intro workshop will be a routine work and can be done by some company at mass level at very low cost.
     I want a team which sit somewhere in office or college or their own rooms to generate the content collaboratively so that this "Trigger Workshop" can occur at any place by anyone.
We can plan and discuss what can be done in 6 hour.
Even If we unable to create workshop by whatsoever reason, I will be able to distribute to 10000+ college in India via IIT and MHRD but we need this FOSS KIT as this stage. I am asking for contribution. please come forward as this contribution will help lakh of student to use FOSS.
    The same is true for FOSS Poster which will be part of FOSS KIT. FOSS poster will be containing A1 sheet sized posters to giving knowledge on FOSS tools.

Please blacklist samr/amr codec based mobile Phones and Cameras

I have LG cookie mobile. when I tried to did video recording , it record in .3gp format in which it use samr codec.
SAMR codec do not play well. VLC says - its not possible to play. but in 10.10 I can play it.
ffmpeg2theora cannot convert it to ogg format. amr OR SAMR are proprietary format. OggConvert try to do this conversion but it do not convert well.
So in nutshell, I request to avoid purchasing mobile phone or Cameras which work on amr codec if you work on GNU/Linux platform.

Please do not care about non-FOSS (Specially M$)

you might be loving "Platform Independent" term and love to see product which are platform independent. But should we really care about non-FOSS ?
the answer is No.
VLC Firefox and many other software are available in all platform. Many people use Microsoft Office even though it is not available for Linux systems. So Platform Independence is not always a imp criteria. Imagine if 15 year back from today, If All fossy guys of world would have made a strong determination that they will never code a FOSS applications for non-FOSS platforms (Like M$) then today at 2011, we will be having GNU/Linux distro with all the very good software and on the overhand Windows user will not be having any good software atall.
This is a slow adoption model but with the slow and steady work FOSS lead to much better software.
Ex - Proprietary Technology vendor are much fanatic then us
* M$ never try to create any product for non-FOSS, we FOSS guys prepare platform-independent code
* M$ do not recognise grub but we can fix windows and mount them
* M$ do not recognise ISO standard (odt) and blindly follow its close standards
* M$ create patent and promote a FOSS-incompatible environment.
* This list is very long and prove that proprietary and close technology vendors are much fanatic for their technology and ideals.
Why we (ALL the FOSS ecosystem) should become fanatic and promote only FOSS by all means. We much follow MK Gandhi's Non-cooperation_movement and strongoly avoid anything other FOSS and open format.

Hello group members,

Kannada is not having an OCR program to convert scanned images to text to further edit and this lack is making people to type full text for editing purposes. The advantages of OCR program need not be detailed for s/w people, but its requirement and use in enriching the language by putting the large quantity of the literature in text format on the web cannot be exaggerated.

Having said the above I want to point out that there is a ray of hope as a free s/w Tesseract (http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/) is a program which can be trained for any language. This feature has to be exploited and a service to Kannada can be rendered by those who are knowledgeable in s/w and love their language.

There is a very small group which is doing this work in bits. This group would like to invite more people to join.

Connecting Engineering Colleges via FOSSy Students

In just 2 days students from total 31 Colleges came forward to show that they have FOSS presence in their colleges and listed their name.

Here it goes -

people normally do two thingss

* Blog/Tweet

* Upload Images/Document

we have wordpress (like blogspot.com), http://status.net/ (like Twitter), http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallery_Project (like flickr)

and there are several other FOSS applications.

If we combine and integrate all such FOSS tool to generate one mega integrate tool then there will be no need to join any proprietary services. Everybody will be using his/her domain.

Hi Narendra!

Since past two Saturday's me and some of my friends are introducing Linux to school students under the able leadership of Mr. Ashok Kumar A.(Asst. Prof., N.M.A.M. Institute of Technology, Nitte, Karkala Taluk, Karnataka). Our objective is to introduce students to the world of Free and Open Source Software. On a personal front, I am impressed by your work in promoting FOSS. I am happy to bring to your notice that one school has approached us to conduct a programme for their students the coming Saturday.

Regarding how we proceed, first we ask the students to familiarize themselves with the OS for few minutes with few inputs from us. The students don't face any difficulty at all. Later we give a formal introduction to Linux, issues like piracy, security issues, expensiveness of proprietary software are discussed. Then after a break I give my presentation on SchoolOS and simple tasks are given to students, like writing their experiences, drawing something, typing speed test etc. Students are asked questions based on presentations and whoever answers first is rewarded. Finally an online quiz is also conducted. Most of the students express their willingness to switch to Linux from Windows at the end of the session.

Now on a later date we will be conducting a "Linux Habba" meaning Linux Fest which will be a full day event. We plan to explain students about the ease of installing Linux, showcase various possibilities of Linux etc. Since you have the experience of introducing SchoolOS to wide variety of students I would like to hear your suggestions.

AICTE refused to give details of MoU between Microsoft and AICTE (with image)

As we know - AICTE ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_India_Council_for_Technical_Education ) has made some sort of MoU with Microsoft and Autodesk .

This is a great danger to FOSS community. AICTE in 2008, there were 2388 approved engineering colleges, with a total student intake capacity of 8.2 lakh students.
AICTE is just selling ( http://techrights.org/2010/10/16/aicte-sellout/ ) these engineering student. learning proprietary skills is not needed in todays competitive market where we have a huge scope for FOSS based skill set. Almost every company has shifted towards FOSS (Free and OpenSource Software). 495 Super-Computers out of 500 runs on GNU/Linux.
I have filled up an RTI some month ago to AICTE for the discloser of MoU to AICTE ( http://techrights.org/2010/10/21/aicte-challenged/ ) but they have refused to give details of MoU.

We the digital freedom fighters, must oppose the AICTE for their "non-support" for FOSS and supporting vendor based education system.
Please write to director AICTE for asking support for FOSS

I have a good news. Please see in the attachment a copy of the letter sent by Mr. N. K. Sinha, IAS, Additional Secretary (TEL), Department of Higher Education, MHRD to AICTE and Directors and VCs of Central Universities.

In this, Mr. Sinha suggests that the academic institutions should explore open source equivalent for academic, administrative and financial requirements, before going to proprietary solutions.
